Jonathan Merrison – Aeolian studies using an environmental wind tunnel facility

The Planetary Environment Facilities at Aarhus University include a unique re-circulating wind tunnel capable of low pressure operations. Funding through various EU networks and trans-national access has allowed it to be used extensively by research groups studying aeolian phenomena. These include, for example, studies of saltation dynamics, detachment threshold, ripple generation, dust mobilization and studies focused upon the Aeolian environment of Mars. An overview of these collaborative activities will be presented, as well as the technology behind this facility, including novel sensor techniques that have been developed.
