Kat Fitzsimmons – Between mountains and deserts: Interactions between aeolian processes, landforms and climate along the Silk Road

Central Asia – epicentre of the famed Silk Road – lies at the intersection between the major northern hemisphere climatic subsystems, yet we know little about its role in global climate dynamics past and present. This is largely because we have yet to recognise the full potential of the region’s widespread aeolian deposits. In this seminar we will explore the relationship between wind regimes, climate and the distribution, morphology and timing of dunes and loess across Central Asia, from Kazakhstan to Tajikistan.
